Our interactive learning resource on implicit biases and stereotyping aims to keep our top priorities on making sure that all learners are able to engage meaningfully with our content no matter their background or circumstance. This topic is one that can be both personal and emotionally charged. We have tried our best to design activities in a respectful and inclusive way that is accessible to all needs and learning styles. For instance, one of our main learning activities involves students engaging with and analyzing everyday scenarios where biases may occur- this is done through collaborative discussion and reflection pieces. Although group work can lead to great brainstorming, I can recognize that not all students are comfortable in live discussions (I know it always makes me anxious). To address this I would like to incorporate flexible alternatives such as an online discussion board or anonymous answer technology like kahoot. We could also offer options like audio reflections and/or short journaling prompts so students are still able to meet their learning outcomes no matter what needs or restraints they have.
This prompt is interesting as our interactive learning design did not focus much on how to adjust learning if an unexpected event occurred such as having to return to online schooling or students needing to do their work remotely (fools paradise?). We would have to consider ways our resources could still be utilized to similar extents as it would be in a classroom. The learning activities could be adapted to online platforms such as Google Docs or Microsoft teams to collaborate and discuss. In this case students could still be able to submit responses in a variety of formats (like text, audio or video) while also having aspects of anonymity if one chooses.
I think it is important to have a learning environment where students feel seen, supported and as though it’s safe to share so we can have insightful discussions on such a deep topic.
